Simon Wellington is an artist who works in a variety of mediums. He uses watercolour, oils, acrylics right through to Pub Signs painted in high pigment gloss enamels.
Simon produces a series of very limited print runs of paintings that are affordable to all. These hold their value due to limited editions. Greeting Cards are also a way of getting his work more broadly recognised and are available wholesale.
One man shows in places like Wells Cathedral and the RUH Gallery Bath; as well as invitational private showings and charity events has helped him get recognised to the wider public.
Simon is a trained signwriter and has tutored college courses. He uses high density sign enamels which have a good weather resistance. He still dabbles in the profession purely for his own enjoyment.
Simon’s grandfather Arthur was a talented artist who painted many of the pub signs in the Midsomer Norton area and now Simon himself offers the very same service! Get in touch today for your very own custom painted sign to display at your pub.
This sign is made from rough sawn timber with a wooden frame and painted in matt colours that I have distressed. This ages the look of the sign. I then dusted it down with talc to stop the gold leaf sticking to other parts of the sign.
The gold lettering is painted in with a gold size. Gold size is a slow drying paint which acts as an adhesive to the gold leaf. Real gold is then gently applied to the size and left to dry. The excess gold is rubbed off with cotton wool and the talc stops the gold sticking to other areas of the sign. I then use high density enamels to add shadows to the lettering and finish with a black outline and decorative border.
If anyone would like to commission a sign like this it would cost around £250.
